Best Ways to Get Rid of Sugar Ants for Good

As their name suggests, sugar ants love the sweet stuff, and we here at Contractor’s Best Pest Control are continually amazed at how resilient these creepy crawlers are. You might not be as excited to go to war with these critters as we are, but don’t worry, they won’t take over your home unless you let them. Here are some ways to get rid of these ants for good.

Clean Everything

Sugar ants aren’t just attracted to sugar. They also like greasy and rotting foods. Your mission, should you decide to accept it, is to clean your kitchen as you’ve never cleaned it before. Any crumb will attract the ants, so pull everything out of your kitchen cupboards and pantry and clean them thoroughly first. Then, pull out the appliances and clean under them. Clean the appliances and scrub the countertops and floors after you do the next thing on our list.

Store Your Food Differently

You would think that you could store your food in the containers they came in, but if you have sugar ants, it’s time to store differently. This isn’t just about sugar, so don’t think tossing it in an airtight container will do the trick. Store everything – cookies, crackers, cereal, pasta… whatever! – in airtight containers. Your goal is to leave nothing for the ants to sense because once they get wind there’s a box of opened cereal in the cupboard, they’ll seek it out.

Plug Entrances into Your Home

It’s possible the sugar ants have found their way into your home through a crack or hole. Inspect your kitchen for holes that introduce outdoor elements. You might have an entry point through the plumbing underneath your kitchen sink, or the ants may find their way into the kitchen through an unsealed window frame. Find the entryways and caulk them shut. This not only prevents creepies from getting inside it also reduces your energy bills.

Repel Them

Certain things repel ants and are greener cleaners than that chemically-laden one you might be using. Ants hate the smell of vinegar, so wipe down your countertops regularly with a mixture of half white vinegar and half water. Ants also hate cinnamon, so sprinkle it near the areas where you see them most. Finally, if you want to go all Walking Dead on their behinds, mix boric acid with baking soda and some sugar. This attractant will kill them once they ingest it but keep it away from the pets!
