Tips For Pest Control

Four Things that Attract Cockroaches to Your Home

The first step to understanding how to keep cockroaches out of your home is understanding why they choose your home to hang out in at all. Contractor’s Best Pest Solutions has these tips for you about what cockroaches have on their “ideal hangout” checklist.

Water

Water is essential, even for cockroaches. They can live for a long time without access to water, but not forever. Roaches love humid conditions, even if there isn’t a lot of water available right away for drinking. That means that they love hanging out in drains, under the kitchen or bathroom sink, or any other areas that involve moisture, like a damp basement. But even if your basement is their happy spot, that doesn’t mean that those bugs will stay there, unfortunately. You’re likely to find them everywhere.

Food

Every living creature needs food in order to survive and cockroaches are no exception. When they wander into your home and realize that they’ve got a solid source of food, that’s a huge check on their list. That’s also going to make them far more likely to stick around, particularly if that food source is a continual one. Food doesn’t have to mean actual food, either. Cockroaches will also eat paper, glue, cardboard, and disgustingly enough, other insects that have died.

Warmth

Cockroaches don’t like cold weather very much, so that means that when the weather gets cold outside, the cockroaches look for new places to hang out. If they find that your home has a source of food and a source of water, they’re golden. This is a great time to point out that this is one of those attractants that shows that your house doesn’t have to be dirty or in bad shape in order to be appealing to something like a cockroach.

Security

They might seem eternal, but individual cockroaches are not immortal. There are plenty of predators outside that love nomming on cockroaches on a regular basis. There are also natural situations that can affect safety for cockroaches, like periods of severe rain that cause their normal haunts to flood. Hanging out inside your home gives them a haven from predators and from natural situations that can shorten their lives.

If you’ve found one cockroach in your home, odds are pretty good that they have friends there, too. Contractor’s Best Pest Solutions in Buford, GA has solutions for you that can help. You don’t have to keep living with cockroaches.
