Signs I’ve Been Bitten By A Poisonous Spider

Georgia is home to two poisonous spiders, unfortunately. Both the black widow and brown recluse (fiddler) spiders make their way into Georgia homes and businesses, but they can be easily controlled with proper pest control solutions. Contractor’s Best Pest Solution recommends prevention as the best medicine to prevent being bit by either poisonous arachnid. This doesn’t mean you will never be bitten but it reduces your chances significantly. Here are signs you’ve been bitten by a poisonous spider.

Signs of a Spider Bite

You can also be bitten by one of the many non-poisonous spiders in Georgia. These critters, including the poisonous ones, are generally non-aggressive. They don’t want you to bug them anymore than you want them to bug you. Still, if you scare them, they may bite. Signs of a spider bite include

  • Itching
  • Red welt
  • Swelling
  • Two tiny hole marks

The latter may be nearly invisible to the naked eye. If you notice these symptoms and they are mild, you were most likely only bitten by a non-poisonous spider. In this case, the bite can be treated at home with OTC antihistamines, antibiotic ointment, and an ice pack to reduce any swelling.

Signs of a Poisonous Spider Bite

If you’ve been bitten by a black widow or brown recluse spider, the above symptoms will be much more severe. You will also have a severe reaction to the spider bite if you are allergic to the venom, whether poisonous or non-poisonous. Head to the ER right away if you have any of the following signs:

  • Anxiety/panic
  • Breathing difficulties
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Headache
  • High blood pressure
  • Muscle cramping and/or pain
  • Nausea
  • Pain around the bite
  • Rash all over your body
  • Rash around the bite
  • Red or purple blister
  • Restlessness
  • Severe itching
  • Sweating
  • Swollen lymph glands
  • Vomiting

These dangerous symptoms suggest you’ve either been bitten by a poisonous spider or you are having an allergic reaction to a non-poisonous spider bite. Do not take chances. Head to the emergency room right away for medical treatment. Time is of the essence if you’ve been poisoned or are allergic.
